Martin Gilmore’s teaching centers on connecting players directly to the history, traditions, and techniques that shape American roots music. His classes emphasize repertoire-based learning, using songs and tunes as the foundation for understanding rhythm, melody, and harmony as well as the culture surrounding them. Whether in a classroom, workshop, or private lesson, Martin focuses on building listening skills, ensemble awareness, and confidence through practical experience and participation. His approach encourages students to discover their own musical identities and find their musical community, all while developing a deep appreciation for the cultural stories behind the music.
Workshops, Courses, & Residencies
Workshops (60–120 minutes)

Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar Bootcamp – Build solid rhythm foundations through classic bluegrass and old-time grooves. Focus on timing, right-hand technique, phrasing, dynamics, and drive.

Soloing Without Scales – Learn melodic improvisation using song-based ideas rather than abstract theory.

Bluegrass Singing 101 / 201 – Explore bluegrass singing styles and skills. From singing lead to duet and trio harmonies on classic songs. Focus on expression, blend, phrasing, and arranging.

Arranging a Fiddle Tune for Band – Turn a simple melody into a dynamic group arrangement using structure, harmony, and interaction.

Writing the Folk Song – A participatory songwriting workshop exploring narrative, place, and tradition in contemporary songwriting.

Progressions: Bluegrass Guitar – Offered through Swallow Hill Music Association. This is a 16-week course developing rhythm, tone, and ensemble awareness through repertoire-based study.
Progressions: Songwriting – Offered through Swallow Hill Music Association this is a 16-week guided songwriting curriculum blending tradition and originality, with lectures, peer feedback and live performance elements. -
Folk Music History & Culture – Offered through the University of Denver Enrichment Program. These lecture-and-discussion-based courses explore the history and evolution of American folk and roots music. Topics have included The History of Cowboy Music, The Development of the Bakersfield Sound in Country Music, The Beginnings of Country Music: The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, and The Story of Bluegrass. Each course examines how musical traditions developed through migration, technology, and cultural exchange, connecting the stories of artists and communities to the broader American experience.

Bluegrass Ensemble Lab – A performance-based ensemble class emphasizing arrangement, listening, and communication between players. Groups learn and perform a set repertoire of music.
Residencies (1–5 days)

Bluegrass Jam Camp – Offered through Wernick Method Jam Camps. Martin is a certified Wernick Method teacher and can lead structured jam camps for players at any level, emphasizing collaboration, timing, musical community and the joy of music.

Build-A-Band Residency – Students form small ensembles to learn, arrange, and perform traditional songs and tunes by the end of the residency. Excellent for ensembles of any size or skill level.

Songwriting Intensive – Participants write collaboratively, exploring melody, lyric, and storytelling techniques.

Roots of American Music Residency – A historical and musical journey combining lecture, demonstration, and performance across multiple genres. Students learn, arrange, and perform repertoire of traditional artists, as well as the history and culture of where that music came from.

Performance Coaching – Helping individual performers and ensembles refine tone, phrasing, and stage presentation within American roots music styles. Martin draws on his extensive experience as a bandleader and educator to guide groups in ensemble direction, arrangement, and communication, as well as one-on-one coaching for individual performance technique, expression, and repertoire development.

Each course is designed to be adaptable for workshops, residencies, or semester-length instruction, with a focus on experiential learning, historical context, and musical collaboration. These examples demonstrate Martin’s comprehensive approach to teaching musicianship, creativity, and the traditions of American roots music. Progressions: Bluegrass Guitar (16 Weeks) - Swallow Hill Music Association
This course develops bluegrass guitar rhythm and lead skills. It focuses on rhythmic precision, tone control, developing lead lines, improvisation and ensemble awareness through repertoire-based learning. The rhythm guitar section explores right-hand technique, bass runs, and accompaniment patterns drawn from traditional and contemporary bluegrass standards. The lead guitar section helps students understand how to develop solos, build improvisation skills, and be creative and expressive within the traditions of bluegrass. Each section introduces ten new songs and three new fiddle tunes that build upon previous material, culminating in ensemble performance and guided jam sessions. The class is hybrid and meets once each week online and once each week in person. There is a webpage that contains class materials, practice recordings, extra resources, and a class outline.
Progressions: Songwriting (16 Weeks) - Swallow Hill Music Association
This course focuses on songwriting craft through tradition and originality. Students write songs weekly using prompts drawn from diverse sources. They develop their own resource notebook to draw upon in the future. Lecture sessions discuss the elements and processes of songwriting. Workshopping sessions include guided feedback, lyrics analysis, collaboration, co-writing, and constructive notes. The course concludes with live performances of original songs.The class is hybrid and meets once each week online and once each week in person. There is a webpage that contains class materials, song prompts, assignments, writing exercises, extra resources, and a class outline.
Banjo, Fiddle and Tradition: Exploring the Roots of Bluegrass (4-weeks)
University of Denver Enrichment Program
In this course, professional bluegrass musician and educator Martin Gilmore answers those questions and much more as he explores the origins and development of the genre. Beginning with its roots in Scots-Irish ballads, fiddle tunes, shape-note gospel and the blues, the course examines how these influences informed the music we know today. The course also covers the key figures in bluegrass history, from Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers and Doc Watson to more recent artists like David Grisman, Hot Rize, Béla Fleck, Chris Thile, Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings.
Bluegrass Ensemble Lab (8–16 Weeks) - University of Northern Colorado
A performance-based class where students form small ensembles to arrange, rehearse, and perform a concert of traditional material. Emphasis is placed on arrangement structure, instrumental balance, harmony singing, and live performance skills. The course ends with a final performance and reflection session on ensemble collaboration.
