Wow, the end of the year is almost here, and what a year it has been. I can’t believe how fast it has gone, but I have enjoyed so much of it. I enjoyed playing at the Midwinter Bluegrass Festival this spring, and teaching my class about the Big Bang of Country Music at the University of Denver. I turned 40 in March and taught a wonderful songwriting retreat at Queen Bee Music Association in Santa Fe in April. I was glad to return to Wyoming and Nebraska a few times over the summer, and I especially enjoyed touring in Montana, Texas, and California with Jackson Emmer. I returned to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley for my last year teaching there, and my classes and ensembles at Swallow Hill have been wonderful. I’m excited to have been elected to the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance board, and glad to continue my work as the chair of the Englewood, Colorado Cultural Arts Commission. I am especially honored to have won the Telluride Troubadour Songwriting Competition and the Folks Fest Songwriter’s Showcase Competition and I’m very much looking forward to playing a set at the 2025 Folks Fest in Lyons, Colorado in August.
I think a common refrain I have been reciting when people ask me how I am doing is to say “I’m good, but I’m so busy.” As a musician, I am very grateful to be busy and in this season of thanksgiving I feel compelled to say thank you to my family and my friends for all their support, and to you all for supporting my musical life in so many ways. I am truly grateful to be able to do what I do.
Shows!
December keeps things rolling with a few shows and classes still happening before the Christmas break. There are also a few exciting opportunities coming up in the spring for folks who are interested.
December 7th, I will be at Fort Laramie National Historic Site playing some historic Christmas music for their holiday celebration. Come on out in the morning for a day of events. I will play at 11am at the cavalry barracks.
December 10th, I will be leading a songwriting workshop at the Music District in Fort Collins, Colorado at 5pm. It is for members of the music district so if you would like to attend you will have to sign up, but it’s a great organization that supports the development of musicians in the region. Come join us if you’re around!
December 19th, my Swallow Hill students, and my student Caul Williams from UNC will be showcasing their talents in the Quinlan Cafe at Swallow Hill starting at 7pm. The Swallow Hill Bluegrass Band, Progressions Bluegrass Guitar, and Progressions Songwriting students will be playing songs they have been working on for a concert that is open to the public.
December 20th, I will be in Boulder, Colorado playing at the Dairy Arts Center for a program titled “Songs and Stories for the Longest Night” featuring myself, Danny Schafer, Carla Sciaky, and Ingrid Avison. It should be a wonderful night of songwriting with some fantastic artists. Tickets are available, but don’t wait!
Exciting Teaching Opportunities for the New Year!
I’m thrilled to share some fantastic teaching opportunities coming up at Swallow Hill in the new year! Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills, dive deep into your musical craft, or join a band and perform live, there’s something here for you.
Progressions Classes at Swallow Hill
Applications and auditions will be open soon for my Progressions classes at Swallow Hill. These aren’t your usual 8-week sessions—they’re immersive 16-week courses designed for those ready to dive deeper into their music. I currently offer two Progressions courses:
This class is perfect for anyone who wants to hone their bluegrass guitar skills. Over 16 weeks, we’ll focus on mastering bluegrass techniques and repertoire, developing solos and solid rhythm playing, jamming together weekly to apply what we’ve learned in a group setting
If you love bluegrass and want to take your playing to the next level, this class is for you!
Songwriting can be one of the most rewarding and challenging parts of being a musician. This course is designed to help you build writing and composition skills, break through writer’s block, workshop songs with supportive feedback, explore the business side of music with discussions on licensing and publishing
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned songwriter, this class is a great way to spark creativity and take your music further.
Both courses meet twice a week (once online and once in person), and every semester I’m amazed at the growth and creativity of my students. If you’re ready to invest in your musical journey, I’d love to have you join us.
Swallow Hill Bluegrass Band Class
If you’re ready for the band experience, this class is for you! The Swallow Hill Bluegrass Band is a fantastic way to gain experience in a group setting. Here’s how it works, the class requires an audition, and I select one person per instrument. Together, we’ll learn a full set of music over the course. At the end, you’ll have the chance to perform live in a public showcase
If playing in a bluegrass band has been on your bucket list, now’s your chance! Contact me for details on how to audition.
Private Lessons (Zoom Availability)
For those looking for one-on-one guidance, I have a few spots open for Zoom lessons! Right now, I’m especially focused on songwriting coaching. Whether you need help finishing a song, breaking through creative blocks, or just want constructive feedback, I’m here to help.
I also teach bluegrass guitar, western swing, solo accompaniment.
If you’re interested in lessons or coaching, let’s connect and make it happen!
That’s about it for December. Stay warm and have a happy holiday season whatever you are doing, or wherever you are going. Thank you for all your support in 2024 and I am very much looking forward to all the opportunities that 2025 will bring.
