Happy February! I always feel like winter gets long in February, but spring is just around the corner and I am already making a list of all the things I need to get done around my house. Once the bus starts rolling around here it doesn’t stop until the holidays, and that is certainly true of 2025.

I have several shows in February that I am looking forward to.

February 8th, at 6pm, I will be at the Laramie County Public Library in Cheyenne, Wyoming with the Martin Gilmore Trio playing a free concert for the community. Earlier in the day, at 2pm, I will talk about cowboy music and the history of the American west through music. These programs are always fun and the Cheyenne Library does such a great job bringing cultural programming into the city.

February 14th, 15th, and 16th I will be hanging out at the Midwinter Bluegrass Festival at the Delta hotel in Northglenn, Colorado. I’m not officially playing the festival this year, but I’ll be playing a song or two with KC Groves on Sunday, and helping out for a little bit with Pete Wernick’s Jam workshop. If you’ve never been to this festival, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a wonderful community festival, and a great place to catch up with friends and fellow bluegrassers.

February 22nd at 8pm I will be playing at Swallow Hill Music Association in Denver, Colorado with the Martin Gilmore Trio. I would really love to have a full house at this show, especially since the trio hasn’t played at Swallow Hill in a few years. It would be great to see everyone, and a good excuse to hang out at one of Denver’s best independent music venues. We will be playing a mix of original and traditional acoustic and honky-tonk music. Get your tickets at swallowhillmusic.org! Please come see the show!

A couple of other announcements and things for some of you to keep on the radar. I will be back in Ireland at the beginning of April playing some shows with my dad. Send me a message for more information about that.

Also, for professional musicians and folks in the music industry, I will be producing the Colorado Roots Music Summit again for the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance on May 18th, 2025. This one-day conference will feature performance opportunities, community and networking opportunities, as well as panel discussions on music industry topics specifically geared towards independent musicians. If you are a performer, venue owner, DJ, or other music professional, please join us for the 2025 Colorado Roots Music Summit at Swallow Hill Music Association in Denver, CO from 9am-6pm. It costs $35 and includes lunch and snacks!

There are still a couple of days to sign up for my Progressions classes, though spots are running out. Progressions: Songwriting has only one space left for students, and Progressions: Bluegrass Guitar has four spots left. These classes are sixteen-week deep-dives into their subject matter, designed to help hobby players develop the skills they need to perform, play in ensembles, or just push themselves to the next level of skill and creativity. They meet twice each week (Tuesdays online and Thursdays in-person) for sixteen weeks, and are always a lot of fun. The cohorts often become very close friends, and the improvement over the sixteen weeks is always amazing. They have been some of the most rewarding teaching experiences I have had. They are a big commitment, but also a great investment in your creativity and musical development. Classes start on Tuesday, so don’t wait, sign up now!

A couple of other things I wanted to mention that don’t fit solidly into the “shows” or “teaching” category.

Starting this month, I will be reworking my YouTube channel to add more videos. Current subscribers know that I post two songs (usually) each week. These are usually folk songs or songs I like to perform, but mostly stuff I probably won’t ever record. That will continue, but I will also be adding a weekly lesson video on various topics, as well as a Jimmie Rodgers song every Wednesday until I run out of them. If you are not subscribed, please check out my channel and join me there.

Also starting this month I will be writing, recording, and posting an original song each week on my Patreon site. I did a project like this several years ago. It was challenging, fun, and has proven to be quite a treasure trove of material to draw from even all these years later. It’s time to get back on track and set some deadlines so I can keep up with my students and actually get stuff written. Like I tell my students “I can not write songs all day”. Please check out my Patreon page and for just $5 each month you can hear the new songs and support my music in a more sustainable way.

For those of you who are not familiar with Patreon it is a great way  to support independent artists, writers, musicians, creators, etc. Patreon is the best way to put money directly in their pockets and keep them sustainable. You make a monthly contribution and it helps give folks in the gig economy a more predictable income. In return they offer perks like behind the scenes glimpses, unique music, videos, Q&A, sessions, etc. Please check it out and support folks who are making things!

I’m looking forward to what is shaping up to be an extremely busy 2025. I’m very excited to see you all out and about, and February is the month when it all kicks off. Keep warm, spring is coming!

Martin
